Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body. Cholesterol assists the body in making hormones, Vitamin D and substances that help digest food. Cholesterol travels through the bloodstream via lipoproteins and lipoproteins come in two types, low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high density lipoprotiens (HDL).

LDL is considered the bad cholesterol and HDL the good. The LDL is said to be bad because high levels can lead to a build up in the arteries which can lead to heart disease. HDL is considered good because it takes excess cholesterol to the liver for removal.
