What is carnival really about and how did it originate?

Carnival is a significant festival celebrated in Trinidad since the 18th century. It is huge of part of the island's culture and history. Carnival originated from French settlers in the 18th century. Carnival is usually celebrated on the Monday and Tuesday before the Lenten season or fasting season observed by Catholics. It is commonly known as Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
Some significant characteristics of carnival are:
- calypso music
- soca music
- mas or masqueraders/colorful costumes
- steelpan
- fetes
- competitions (Soca competition, band competition, calypso competition)
- crossing the stage/playing mas on Monday and Tuesday.

Carnival has since grown and is now celebrated throughout the world. Some popular carnival destinations are Brazil, Toronto, Miami, New York and London.
